Chris Stein
Chadron State College
Assistant Football Coach

2007 -- This is the seventh season that Chris Stein has been on the Chadron State coaching staff. He became a permanent part of the staff in December 2004, when Bill O’Boyle was named the head coach. He primarily works with the quarterbacks, and this year has become the passing game coordinator.
Stein is a former CSC tight end who caught 107 passes for 1,281 yards and 14 touchdowns during his career that ended in 1989. He was selected the team’s outstanding offensive player, earned honorable mention All-American and was the first recipient of the Don Beebe Most Inspirational Player Award that season. He had the honor of being inducted into the CSC Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2006.
As a player, Stein may be best remembered for catching the touchdown pass that allowed the Eagles to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 38-34 in the final game of the 1989 season. He carried two Tigers into the end zone the final five or so yards to complete the 18-play, 76-yard drive with just 1:30 remaining. The victory allowed the Eagles to advance to the NAIA playoffs for the first time.
After graduating, Stein coached high school football two years at Julesburg, Colo., four years at Gordon and one year at Gering. Led by teams that were 10-1 and 8-2 at Gordon, his career record is 35-29.
He then returned to CSC to work on his master’s degree and help coach the Eagles for three years. Earlier this decade, he was a regional manager three years for Prime Outdoor Group, which sells billboard advertising.
After living in Rockford, Ill., Stein and his family returned to Chadron in 2003, when he became head coach of the Wyoming Cavalry of the National Indoor Football League. He resigned that position when he joined the CSC staff full-time.
Stein’s father, Dick Stein, had a 144-71 record while coaching the Chadron High football team for 22 years before retiring in 2000. Chris’s brother, Kevin, is a former CSC quarterback and is the football and track and field coach at Gordon-Rushville High.
Chris and his wife Nancy, a registered nurse, have five children—Kassi, Karyssa, Kendra, T.D. and Madison. Nancy was born and raised in the Chadron area. Her father, Gil Nitsch, played football at Chadron State 1962-64. He is a farmer, a former Dawes County commissioner and often is a member of the “chain gang” at CSC football games.
