2008 - John Reiners is entering his 11th season as the head track and field coach at Chadron State College. During that period, 60 of the 85 school records in events generally held have been set and the Eagles have earned All-American honors 34 times, including six last season.
Reiners displays great enthusiasm for the sport, and his high energy level and upbeat attitude have helped him recruit many quality athletes. He leaves no stone unturned while recruiting. The number of participants on Chadron State’s team has more than doubled during his tenure.
Reiners is a graduate of Republican Valley High School at Indianola, Neb., where he was a football standout and won the Class C 800 meters at the Nebraska State High School Track and Field Meet as a senior in 1989 with a time of 1:56.69. He earned a letter in track at Chadron State as a freshman before deciding to concentrate on football.
Reiners lettered four years in football for the Eagles. He earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from CSC in 1995 and 1997, respectively.
The coach does double duty at Chadron State. In addition to being the head track and field coach, Reiners is an assistant football coach, working with the running backs.
This past fall, he was the position coach for Danny Woodhead, who became the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher and earned his second-straight Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the outstanding Division II player.
John is married to the former Jennifer Vasey, a native of Laramie, Wyo., who is one of Chadron State’s all-time great volleyball players. She teaches and coaches in the Chadron Public Schools.
They have a nine-year-old son, Dylan, a six-year-old daughter, Ashtyn, one-year-old daughter, Addi, and five-month-old daughter Kali.
